Overview
The children in modern society, being fortunate enough to have come under the influence of technological development and are empowered by the benefits of a global way of life. On the other hand, a still larger section of children in society, caught in the jaws of poverty, illiteracy, superstition, and narrow-mindedness, are unable to break through the entry barriers to the benefits of modernization. India’s vast number of slum children, street children and rural children are deprived of the basic necessities like food, nutrition, medical care and education.
The project aims for a threefold development of the above said students – INTELLECTUAL, PHYSICAL and MENTAL.
Intellectual Development
The project helps the children to give them a better edge on the formal education. To achieve this, the project provides Teachers and Volunteers who, help them by providing assistance to complete their class-assignments and guide them with their subject related queries. Most of the students, from various slums and hilly villages, walk a distance of 3 to 4 kms and assemble at the GAP premises within the Ashrama’s campus after their school hours and follow a daily routine from 03:30 p.m to 06:00 p.m, for six days a week. Furthermore, Mathematics; English and Hindi are taught to them on alternative days.
Students have to start their daily routine with Vedic Chanting and prayer to Goddess Saraswati, the embodiment of knowledge, and end their routine with salutations to the Holy Trio.
The daily schedule consists of:
Prayer | 05 mins |
Homework and General Class | 125mins |
Play | 20mins |
Tiffin | 15mins |
Physical Develpoment
Hygiene plays a very important and pivotal role and in this project we make sure that the students are imbibed with this aspect at a very young age. We keep a track of the students’ cleanliness on a daily basis. Moreover, the personal hygiene is checked weekly. The necessary toiletries (soap, tooth-paste, tooth-brush etc.) are distributed monthly. In addition to this the beneficiary students receive, for one time, items such as the School bags, Rain-coats, Uniforms and also Blankets for their parents. Along with providing the amenities the students are imparted both formal and informal training on Health and Hygiene, clean sanitation habits, necessity of clean drinking water, regular brushing of teeth, washing the hands, clipping the nails etc.
The students are encouraged to play various sports and games such as: Shuttle Badminton, Cricket, Football, Carom, Kho-Kho, Athletics and many more. A Physical Training session is held once a week, where students participate collectively and perform Yogasanas and Drill Exercises.
Health Check-Up
Students should have a both mental and physical development. To keep a track of their physical development we conduct Health Check-Up for the kids on every fortnight. We keep a track of their weight and height, and a general ENT and Eyes check-up are also conducted. In addition, Free Medicines are also distributed to the necessary students.
Mental Development
Computer Classes
The ashrama has taken this initiative to work in hand with the New Era of Digitalization, wherein the deprived children are given an opportunity to learn and enrich their view towards the neo-global pattern, which makes them ready for the competitive world. In achieving this step, the Ashrama has started Computer training classes for the benefit of the bright students. We have dedicated a separate set of computers for the GAP students with an instructor who helps the students learn the usage of the computers.
Social Awareness
GAP studentsa re encouraged to take part, in some of the common public cleanliness activities, as expected of all of us, under the “Swachha Bharat Abhiyan” scheme and other social works. This develops a sense of public responsibility among them and prepares them as responsible citizens of tomorrow’s India. We conduct cleanliness programs at public places such as: Gardens, Temple premises etc.
