History of the Ashrama and Mission in brief

Dehradun was the gateway to Uttarakhand in the 19th century. Swami Vivekananda, Swami Saradananda, Swami Turiyananda, and Swami Akhandananda - all direct disciples of Bhagwan Sri Ramakrishna, trekked to the upper Himalayas through this valley, Swami Turiyananda practised severe spiritual disciplines at Bauri Shiva Mandir, a little away from Rajpur Road, Dehradun, towards Mussoorie. During the second visit of Swami Vivekananda in November 1897, he noticed the plight of the people of this part of the Himalayas and planned to set up an orphanage here with the help of Capt. and Mrs. Sevier. However, due to some reasons, that could not materialize.

In order to fulfil Swamiji's wish, Swami Karunananda, a disciple of Swami Brahmananda, while trekking through Dehradun, decided to open a spiritual retreat during 1916 in Kishanpur amidst the picturesque surroundings on Dehradun-Mussoorie road, 6 km away from the town proper, overlooking the beautiful Shivalik range.

The Ashrama having started, the property was duly transferred to Swami Brahmananda, the first President of the Ramakrishna Order by a legal deed on 23rd July 1919. Thereafter, the Ashrama was affiliated to Ramakrishna Math, Belur.

In 1925, the Ramakrishna Mission Home of Service, Varanasi, purchased a plot of land having two cottages adjoining the Ashrama. The main idea behind this purchase was to accommodate the old and ailing monks, who after retirement or after prolonged strenuous services, could recoup their lost health and undergo spiritual practices. Swami Turiyananda renamed it as "Ramakrishna Sadhan Kutir". Within a short time, the existing Ramakrishna Ashrama was merged with the newly started Ramakrishna Sadhan Kutir. The amalgamated establishment was managed by the Ramakrishna Mission Home of Service, Varanasi, for about nine years.

In 1934, Ramakrishna Sadhan Kutir passed through yet another change and became an independent centre of the Ramakrishana Math Headquarters, and its original name continued.

Gradually the Ashrama emerged as one of the very prominent branches of the Ramakrishna Order. Swami Virajanandaji, the 6th President of the Ramakrishna Math & the Ramakrishna Mission visited the Ashrama many times. Here, once he gave initiation to the spiritual aspirants In later years, Presidents and Vice Presidents of the Ramakrishna Order, continued to bless spiritual seekers with initiation. Many erudite scholar monks of the Order liked the place for its serene environment congenial atmosphere for inner spiritual uplift. It was here that Swami Jagadanandaji Maharaj translated the "Leela Presanga" (Life of Sri Ramakrishna, written by Swami Saradananda in Bengali) into English and named "The Great Master".

Contribution of the Universal Temple

It has been observed that when the lord wills, places of pilgrimage develop. He brings in the necessary motivation and requisite resources. Thus, the Lord wished that the Dehradun teertha should have a Universal Temple. Accordingly, on the Buddha Purnima Day, the 11th May 1998, a magnificent temple was dedicated and consecrated to Bhagwan Sri Ramakrishna Dev. A marvellous marble image of Sri Ramakrishna was installed simultaneously.
